BESTIA'S, Made in Chile, not in China.

Whenever I come across a brand, I try to follow and analyse their proposals. Most of the time, these revolve around the development of the product, its collection, and brand image campaign, etc… Well, not all cases are the same. Some time ago I came across a Chilean brand of shoes called BESTIAS , which began as a challenge of two young Chilean industrial designers called Felipe Velasco and Ignacio Rios. The intention is to revive the Chilean footwear industry, which deal with the flood of Chinese shoes sold in that country, that was about to disappear.

The proposal seeks to reinitiate not only Chilean design, but also the industry of that country, where only 10% of the footwear consumed in Chile comes from national industry officials said, the rest is all imported.

The most interesting aspects of this brand are the social values they propose.  In particular they seeks to respect and admire the master craftsman of the shoe, select a fine selection of raw materials of domestic origin and maintain a close link to with the designer.  Above all, they ensure that the customer values this commitment and develop a way to generate new sources of employment in Chile. Therefore, establishing a sincere relationship between the commercial and social.

As a result of all this effort and acceptance by the local public,  BESTIAS opened its first store, just a few weeks ago, in the always-interesting Drugstore Gallery in the city of Santiago de Chile.

The speech and message as brand and product proposition are really inspiring. The importance of working only with input from Chile and using local master shoemakers who have the job of a lifetime, is definitely a highlight.

I leave you with a video of BESTIAS to know a little more about the proposal of the brand.

TALITHA. A relationship within the garment

A few weeks ago I finally met Talitha brand in their showroom in the city of Buenos Aires. Honestly, for a long time I had the intension of visiting the showroom to see her clothes and finally I had the opportunity to feel and try them on.

Cecilia Hernandez, the creative director in Talitha, is a young Ecuadorian, who became a professional designer in the city of Buenos Aires. She shuttles between the two countries and has big plans to develop her brand in Argentina.

Regarding the clothes, I can say that the feel of the textures are incredibly interesting. They feel like caressing objects attached to our body and therefore allow us to move as if we were with some protection.

A Wonderful Experience! Additionally, the clothes generate interesting organic irregularities and volume to
the body.

The fabrics are very natural. The feeling is unique due to the certain structure and strength of the fabrics.

Cecilia Hernandez explains that these are unique pieces, experimental designs and the philosophy of the sensitive relationship that develops between the subject's clothing (the garment) and in the subject (the person). Fortunately, I've experienced in complete agreement, what Cecilia Hernandez wants to communicate.

I wait in anticipation for the next collection!

Sustainable Sunglasses

Tronco Peumo

I would like to present Tronco a Chilean Brand of Sunglasses. This design of sunglasses has an interesting proposal of sustainable development, which works to strengthen entrepreneurship in Chile. Likewise, I consider them a must have for this upcoming fashion season!

Tronco sunglasses designs are is characterized by reforestation wood. It presents a new proposal to dress your eyes in a more sustainable way with similar durability of polycarbonate glasses, as they have a protective film that makes the wood stronger.

One of those responsible for the brand Tronco is Eduardo Castillo, who told us that the project originated in a trip to Canada years ago. There he met a person who, in connection with an artisan, began to prepare the project.

This collection was inspired during the early 60's around redesigned classic models of optics, such as Rayban, Carrera and Gucci, etc… Their materials are 100% organic and reforested wood is used. On the other hand, the brand is developing a plan to donate a tree for every pair sold. The product is manufactured by a Canadian carpenter using wood as raw material reforested from eucalyptus.

The brand Tronco make their own creations. Likewise, they want to increase the profile of the woodwork and craftsmanship

Pure Design Fair. Part 2, Buenos Aires. (Very organic Shoes)

Nahuel Correa coworker of Lori Carini from Visceral

We can find wonderful things everywhere but during the Pure Design Fair I found  a creative project that deserves a special highlight. I was meandering the halls of the fair looking for the star product that would inspire me! Suddenly, I looked to my left and noticed a lot of commercial space that reminded me of an old neighborhood butchers, with a very nice boy indeed who was inviting me to enter. Inside I found myself asking whether they sell food here? Well, the answer was infront of me.  They sell shoes!

This project is not only about following the usual fashion trends. In particular, it presents us with a new proposal in dressing our feet that goes far beyond anything we've seen so far. Visceral Brand is Argentinean and produces only here in Argentina using leather of tripes (mondongo in spanish). The tripe is prepared with care and precision. Lori Carini, an Industrial designer, is the brain behind the project and idea in using an interesting texture in the leather.

Tripe is obtained as a waste product and is tanned using traditional and ecological plant extracts.
Most important this is a prime example of how a raw material can be transformed into a new, innovative fashion product in a revolutionary way.

Pure Design Fair. Part 1, Buenos Aires.

Every year I visit the Pure Design Fair in Buenos Aires where I meet some of the most prominent representatives of Argentinean design. The entrance was spectacular and I felt the sensation to know more.  The illuminous beauty at the entrance (see picture below) captivated me but I felt dissapointed that this theme was not continued throughout the fair.

My chosen brands are shown below,I highlight these in particular for their continuity in developing products designs with sustainability in mind.

Carro, the Argentinean accesories brand, which worked in partnership with Pomada Group during the event, designed products that followed sustanaible methods. They created an exhibition space for the support and demonstration of their design creations. The exhibition stand was made from recycled cardboard and Pomada  then reused the  cardboard  in a productive way and thus performed its objective regarding sustainable development and production.

This project obtained commercialized products that had value-added because they were made from discarded materials.

Melissa is a Brazilian brand of plastic shoes.  It is characterized by constant innovations in terms of shapes and volumes to carry on our feet. They usually make collaborations with internationally renowned designers like Alexandre Herchcovitch, Ronaldo Fraga, Vivienne Westwood, Zaha Hadid, Isabella Capeto, Campana Brothers and Gaetano Pesce.

This summer (2013) Melissa will perform collaborative alliance with a young Brazilian designer, Pedro Lourenço. This is not the first time that Melissa bet on emerging with young talents in the fashion world. Recycled Bags and purses

BlueQ Label; This interesting project that reuses plastic to create new products such as, bags and purses deserve my respect. After unifying the plastic, they are very innovative by stamping it with graphics that decontextualized the product that it once was. They can be found on various points of sale in Europe. The graphics and pictures are so beautiful and are made from 95% post-consumer material, what`s more I have now become a fan of them!

I bought them in Asos.com

Likewise we can find in Argentina a very good example of responsibility for the reuse of textile material. We are facing a brand of accessories that reuses material from different locations, costumes, bags of grain, tailoring to create different products. The brand is called CARRO. Firstly they select the fabrics by type and color, then make the appropriate washes, and experiment through the shape, pattern and design of the objects they use to create items such as tablet/laptop sleeves, purses and backpacks etc...

London College of Fashion in Buenos Aires

Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion, belonging to the University of Arts London, gave seminars around the industry of fashion and design for 2 weeks during April in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was their first experience in a South American country. The event was attended by professionals and students from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil and took place at the Metropolitan Design Centre of Buenos Aires. One of the reasons for choosing South America was partly due to the high growth of professionals, students and fashion companies that have been created in these countries over the last 10 years.

Traveling by Metro in Buenos Aires

This shows good initiative from some people who were expressing their displeasure in riding the Metro in the city of Buenos Aires. The protest was peaceful and you can see they are referring to traveling tightly like cows!

Chilean gastronomy; wonderful thing!

Whenever I go to Chile for pleasure or work it is very common to run from one side to the other and not have time to enjoy its cuisine. The fact is that on this occasion I have taken 3 additional days to go to the beautiful town of ConCon, which is on the seafront. According to the recommendations of my local friend Constanza de Larderel, I could not leave without tasting the food in a cute restaurant called "the kitty" (La Gatita in Spanish). The  kitty always has a lot of people waiting outside and it's quite normal to wait 40 minutes to enter the restaurant. This place really left me speechless due to the variety of delicacies and flavors, as such you can not leave this town without tasting their food. Everything is fresh from the sea and caught on the day. Another place to know is where they eat the best pies in the region. The place is called "the deliciosas" this is so are delicious patties there. Do not forget to try the seafood pies!!!
